The Good Doctor
I was working out in the gym one day playing a little basketball, and I was playing defense and I deflected the ball from my opponent. Trying to complete the steal I had to chase the ball down to the other half of the court. So I’m running for it and so is he but I ran into a little trouble literally. I felt this sharp pain in my hamstring and for a few minutes I couldn’t walk. Well after I was able to gather myself I realized that I may have pulled a muscle. I was always cognizant about warning up before playing so these type of injuries wouldn’t happen but the pre-workout just wasn’t in my favor. Let me not forget to mention by this time in my life father time has set in I was 37. Although 37 isn’t considered old by a long shot it could very well be for a non-professional.
So now its two to three days later and I’m still sore and I can’t move around like I’m use to. My mom and aunt had this physician that they regularly go to and I thought maybe it would be a good idea to pay him a visit since he’s taking care of them so well. Made my appointment got to the office and here we are at a place I seldom like to be in a doctor’s office. So I said to Dr. XYZ I was playing basketball and I believe I pulled a muscle, because I felt a pop in my hamstring area but the pain persist in my groin area. He says okay tells me to pull up my shirt and he starts checking my abdomen and telling me to cough. He looks at me and says you have a hernia. Hernia I said! I thought a hernia is when you have a bulging of an organ or tissue through an abnormal opening I replied. I wanted to be as specific as possible in my reply to let him know I was aware of the condition and what symptoms I should have. It gets worse. So I said to him what do I need to do to start the healing process? He told me the only way to rectify a hernia was surgery. He said take this prescription to the drug store this is a concoction that I need you to take so the diagnostic team can see through your body to determine further if it is a hernia.
I said to myself this guy must be crazy it’s no way I’m taking some chemical liquid so you can see inside my stomach and I’m definitely not letting you cut me up. I haven’t been to a medical doctor since its been over a decade. I knew I didn’t have a hernia so I took a holistic approach to healing my body. I started doing yoga, aquatic therapy, focusing on my diet more and lastly just getting proper rest. In about three weeks I was back in the gym playing ball.
The good doctor isn’t trying to do invasive surgery when it is unnecessary, the good doctor isn’t trying to prescribe you with a bunch of synthetic drugs knowing they have no healing power. The good doctor is just that a good doctor their primary concern is the well-being of their patient. A good doctor is going to tell you to get off the meds because he or she knows that over time they’re going to do damage to your internal organs eventually. If the drugs have any efficacy at all its usually short-term hence the depletion of your pills. The good doctor is going to tell you to exercise, eat right, and get some sleep at night. This is their way of telling you to do your part. Disease is so prevalent world-wide the goal for the good doctor should be helping as many people possible not keeping life-long patients.
